Sand Theatre on Tour
presents "Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella"
Probably the most popular German Christmas fairy tale – "Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella" – is brought to life in stunning images by sand artists, painted in sand in a cinematic style and accompanied live by a narrator. A real cinematic treat!
RUNNING TIME: 60 minutes (interval after 30 mins)
“Her cheeks are smudged with ash, but she is no chimney sweep. A little hat with feathers, a crossbow over her shoulder, but she is no hunter. A silver-embroidered dress with a train for the ball, but she is no princess.” With these telling words, a beautiful and mysterious girl presents the initially somewhat slow-witted fairy-tale prince in the popular DEFA Christmas film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” a tricky riddle, which turns out to be a literal hard nut to crack – or, more precisely, three golden hazelnuts.
Blessed by well-meaning fate with these three golden magical fruits, Cinderella – who is bullied by her stepmother and stepsister – manages not only to attract the heir to the throne’s attention, but also to win his heart. How her white horse Nikolaus, dog Kasperle and owl Rosalie, as well as a flock of white doves, help her in this endeavour is the story we tell in this fairy tale painted with sand, in which the shoe lost on the castle steps at Moritzburg is, of course, a key feature.
