Sorbian mysticism meets modern sounds: the legend of the sorcerer's apprentice retold.
The year is 1642 in the Sorbian lowlands. While the Thirty Years' War ravages Europe, the notorious black miller fights for his own existence in his mill. He is in debt to the goddess of death, Smjertnica: every year at Easter, he must sacrifice one of his twelve miller boys - or die himself.
A dark pact and a journey through time In his desperation, the miller resorts to black magic. He transforms his mill wheel into a time-travelling machine and lures Krabat, a boy from the distant future, into his clutches. Krabat is not only supposed to work hard, but also become the heir to the miller's dark arts. But the miller has reckoned without the boy's courage and cunning. Krabat sees through the deadly game and takes up the fight against the dark forces.
A musical theatre experience for the whole family In cooperation with the Lausitz Festival, the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater presents this impressive commissioned work. The renowned composer Marius Felix Lange (known for the fairytale opera Snow White) has collected the traditions, songs and legends of Lusatia and transformed them into a modern, emotional musical spectacle that will captivate young and old alike.
