The excursions of Mr Brouček
Beer, trips to the moon and religious wars: Janáček's loving caricature of the petit bourgeois.
Matěj Brouček doesn't have it easy: unpunctual tenants and political unrest cloud the landlord's mood. His remedy for everyday stress? A long evening in the local pub. But this time the beer takes him further away than he would like. In a drunken stupor, Brouček embarks on two of the most bizarre journeys in opera history.
Two worlds, one realisation
- On the moon: Brouček encounters a completely detached colony of artists who live in their own bubble and have little understanding for his down-to-earth needs.
- In medieval Prague: Suddenly landed in the 15th century, the convinced pacifist (and shirker) is ordered to go to war for religious fanatics. As a deserter, he narrowly escapes death.
In the end, the realisation remains: no matter how far you travel, your own problems - and those of the world - always travel with you. Janáček creates a memorial to this "anti-hero" that is as humorous as it is profound.
Unique soundscapes Leoš Janáček's musical language is as characteristic as it is unmistakable. He developed his melodies directly from the rhythm of speech(speech motifs). The result is a colourful, masterfully orchestrated score that draws the audience directly into the fantastic action.
